Scorpiorefugee Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 (edited) It's been a while, which just shows that Galaxys can be reliable. Unfortunately, I now seem to have lost one cylinder. It started without fuss a couple of days ago on a 30 mile round trip and then ran OK on 2 short trips before becoming permanent. It seems to be a permanent one of four down. I've scanned the site and some useful suggestions from some years ago suggested checking the injector loom and connections and fuel filter. I've checked the injector continuity from the 5 pin connector on the head and they all measure about 3 ohms. I've drained the fuel filter - no water present. The filter was changed about 10,000 miles ago. My VAG com doesn't seem to like WIN 7 (Who does?) so I've ordered another. (£7.50 - how times have changed) My thoughts now are that it could be an injector or, at worst, piston or valve. Hopefully, the brief recovery eliminates the latter but I did think of putting into 6th and pushing it to test compression. It might be worth trying some injector cleaner but it's now Saturday night. My old 110 gal had a needle lift injector go dodgy and I cleared that inadvertently by putting a few litres of unleaded in while half asleep early one morning. Any thoughts, suggestions or tales of past experiences (Relevant please) :) would be appreciated. On a different subject, I posted a request on here a couple of years ago about some annoying crush marks on the velour upholstery which made the interior look quite tatty. I have now managed to get rid of them with a steam cleaner with a stiff brush on the end and it looks like new. Edited August 6, 2011 by Scorpiorefugee Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted August 9, 2011 Author Report Posted August 9, 2011 Total lack of progress apart from now having 2 working VAG coms. I've put in a max strength dose of cleaner and tried a few of Seatkid's Italian tune ups. No smoke and no change. In fact, it was reluctant to even get to red line in 3rd. I have now read the codes and initially there was one which warned of an intermittent electrical fault with injector no. 1 but, when I cleared that one, it didn't return but was replace by a warning that the security system had inhibited engine start??????? It is definitely one short of a full set and struggling to better 20 mpg so I suppose it's time to get up close and personal with the injector wiring loom. The problem with both VAG coms was that I had to select com 3 on the set up screen so I now have a spare. Question - how many of the functions are available with the 'Lite' version of the software? mike999 Posted September 2, 2011 Report Posted September 2, 2011 I am not at all technical and didn't understand a lot of your post (my ignorance, not unclear post!). But I recently had a problem whilst in Spain where my 2002 tdi developed a desire to run on just 3 off its 4 cylinders. Ford Marbella diagnosed a problem with "injector 2". They "removed it, switched it over with injector 1, and then reprogrammed it" I have no idea what that means but it worked and has been fine ever since. They said they have seen the problem before and this usually works. We have done 1800 miles since and its fine. Hope this helps. Quote
NikpV Posted September 3, 2011 Report Posted September 3, 2011 had the degraded injector loom - worked fine when cold but after shorter and shorter intervals whilst running would misfire and jump into limp home mode - new loom was Quote
